Cook County process serving rules have changed.

What changed
Firms are longer required to use the Cook County Sheriff for the service of case-initiating documents in Cook County.
When did it change?
Thursday, January 2, 2025
Since the courts were closed on January 1 in observance of New Years Day, the rule took effect the following day.
The fine print
The Cook County Sheriff must collect a $5 surcharge on case-initiating serves, which was assessed as a court fee on the filing of each summons.
